Disable links working for members withing a certain amount of game time / forum time or have an achievement requirement in game that allows you to post link since the forum is connected with game.

For example :

New players -"Links disable until reaching 3 hours game time / forum time" or "You have not acquired these achievements"

Support this, somewhat of a solution.

I was going to suggest the same thing, but was unsure if it would be effective.

Could they still post on forums? Could they still private message?

IF not.. it might prevent legitimate users from using the forums for x amount of time.

I'm not saying I don't support something like this - it's just important that it's implemented properly.

Yeah absolutely - we can brainstorm together as a community.

Perhaps not allowing an account to send private messages for the first hour of creating the account. Just an idea!

I like this idea, something along these lines should help prevent these phishers.

Support.

Something along these lines should indeed be able to fix it, but as Syntax pointed out, it might be harmful to legit new players.

Support for a brainstorm!

It might work for things like bots, but a dedicated phisher is next to impossible to deter. Even I could post an application the next day that has some little hidden, highly obfuscated snippet of code that will help get passwords in some way.

Hell, I once made one to show a server owner why they shouldn't save passwords locally since I could just send the file that has both in it to myself via smtp.
