Increasing Alora's Player Count via Increased Natural Voting.

Most of Alora's traffic and new players arrive at Alora via 1 of the 4 websites you see when you type ::vote. I joined Alora via one of them. You want the announcement of Sailing to be matched by vote volume to promote Alora to the top of the charts. All players in Alora benefit by increasing the player count. This is like the network effect Facebook, Whatsapp, Youtube, and the dating apps share. 

It's a small suggestion, but the growth of player base this suggestion is designed to cause, positively affects the experience of pretty much every player in Alora. However some people may be critical of this suggestion if they prefer a lower player-count in Alora.

Rather than taking time, this suggestion helps you save time in order to release sailing faster.  First mover-advantage is real. As one example, imagine how few people would care about another rideshare app being released today given that Uber and Lyft already exist. What I'm saying is, being first or second to market with Sailing will be a huge advantage and this suggestion helps unlock that market + it helps grow the player base.

Sailing will be a great update. Let's have the marketing via your rankings in the voting websites coincide with that hard work.

Vote book shop is getting stale anyways.

I haven't played sailing in OSRS. Alora Sailing will be my first experience of it so I don't want to speculate on the exact items. I'll leave that decision up to you, Omi or whomever has a reasonable final suggestion for that. That's a great discussion topic here but I'm impartial.

I also want to mention that the timing of this suggestion landing should probably coincide with the first release of sailing for best effect.

what items would be added anyway??? to promote? and how would this help release sailing faster, thats a development thing, putting random items in the vote shop isnt gonna magically speed up dan's coding, also this looks like a narcissistic opportunity to start selling stuff early for money, and adding sailing items isnt gonna help grow the playerbase, i feel like even an announcement is gonna do more work than that, also from what i know alora is the only rsps making sailing anyway, most of the content for the first part of the upd is done so i'm not sure what theyre working on rn but adding items to the vote shop isnt gonna speed anything up

overall this just sounds like you looking for an opportunity to merch after losing that bowfa to pker without spending effort actually training sailing which is a rather fun skill, no support whatsoever

I’d support adding a couple of Sailing-related items to the Vote Shop, as long as they’re balanced appropriately.

I also agree with the point about using Sailing to bring some extra attention to Alora. With Sailing being such a major piece of newer OSRS content, having some themed rewards available around it could help make Alora feel current and give returning or potential new players something recognizable to check out.

I’d just prefer the rewards to be cosmetic, convenience-based, or otherwise non-essential rather than anything that skips meaningful Sailing progression. That way it helps refresh the Vote Shop, encourages voting, and potentially brings some extra eyes onto the server without turning the shop into a shortcut for the skill.

Can't think of many items off the top of my head right now, but the gem sack is a good shout actually. It can hold either 60 or 80 of every type of uncut gem (can’t remember which), from opal all the way up to dragonstone.

@Heaven Sent, Good comment, but looks like the gem bag is already in the vote shop, and it's a Crafting item anyhow. What I'm aiming for is a Sailing item as popular as crystal keys or Sherlock notes. If we go the cosmetic route instead, I'd price it around 3k, 6k, or 9k vote points.

 

@H Yes, I do now. Four ideas:

 

1. Boat speed boost (shop item)

 

A perk that makes your boat ~25% (or ~50%) faster for 15 minutes per book (20 max), stacking exactly like the XP boost. Read four books back to back and you're sailing at Porsche speed for an hour. It would put real action into the long hauls: Port Sarim to Port Tyras, Zul-andra, Port Phasmatys.

 

To sell it as an item to consume vote points: "Bottled Dragonfire." Secondary use: a few bottles recharge your DFS (melee shield), ancient wyvern shield (mage shield), or dragonfire ward (ranged shield) without a trip to the dragons to charge it. Weak but expected use case. Making bottled dragonfire from dragonfruit is unimplemented in Alora and using sweet cactus fruit to make dragonfire never made sense anyway.

 

Note: This perk should be disabled / not available during any point of the Baracuda Trials. 

 

2. Daily Task Board reset (shop item, ~110 points ≈ 3 vote books)

 

An item that resets your Daily Task Board. Some players online report `Daily Task Board fatigue: port tasks only refreshing once per day discouraged them from training Sailing on days they'd already burned through the worthwhile tasks, and it started feeling like "DailyScape."` A reset item fixes that.

 

Balance-wise it's safe because voting is on a 12-hour cooldown timer, so the supply of these is naturally time-gated. Low-volume concern: this might be dead content at 99, plenty of players will just camp salvaging regardless, and there may already be a different progressive system than daily tasks planned.

 

3. Ocean Encounter odds boost (vote book perk or shop item)

 

Increases the chance of an Ocean Encounter (https://oldschool.ru...cean_encounters) by ~20% for 30 minutes. The perk form is the simplest version. As an item, I picture a pint of "extra dark" squid ink. To be practical it would need to be a stackable, a 4-dose like Guthix rest, or a single dark pint that lasts 4x as long for 4x the points.

I can't confidently price this one like the others above because I don't even know which encounters are in Sailing, but if forced at gunpoint: 115 points per 30 minutes.

 

4. Cannon max hit brew (vote book perk or shop item)

 

Same pint theme: temporarily raises cannon max hit by +1, or +2 if you have a Keg of Perildance Bitter installed, since that keg already gives +1.

 

Why no Sailing uniques

 

I deliberately left out Sailing uniques like dragon cannonballs because (AFAIK) every Sailing unique in OSRS has crashed in price (unfortunately), and I don't want to devalue the Sailing rewards here.

 

Coming up with these was a genuine balancing act. #1 is my favorite, probably because I'm a guy and guys like fast cars . For the calmer skillers who'd rather not have more action, #2, #3, #4 are the play.

 

Side notes

• Bug check: Seed Box should support Cotton Seeds, Hemp Seeds, and any other Sailing seeds.
• Success metric: this suggestion worked if vote books rise from 6m to 7m (+16%).
• For anyone wanting to merch in the next 2 days, consider selling: logs, nails, planks, bars, rope, swamp paste, ores. Lowest tiers appear to have the highest ROI. Bronze bars are 500k ea at time of writing while rune bars are only ~20k ea. No one is selling swamp paste today yet.
• Vote books generally give 37.5 vote points per book.

Shameless self-promotion + AI disclosure: I prompted an LLM through a Mac app I built this year (also on iOS) to make the original dense wall of text here "more readable." I've always been better with computers than writing.

Ohh I see, I thought you were trying to bring in other items that came along with Sailing, like the gem sack, extended stam pots, etc.

Btw, the gem sack holds all tiers of uncut gems, while the regular gem bag only holds the traditional ones.

I now have 99 Sailing on Eby and 87 Sailing on GIM Eby so I have experience to work with now. I still love the effect of option 1 Boat Speed Boost so long as the boost is ignored during Barracuda Trials. I'm less sure about the implementation theme of "bottled dragonfire" despite it being a great missing item to bring into the game because how would you use it? Most of sailing is wind-themed. Simplest implementation would be to just make the boat speed boost a perk of reading the vote book rather than a shop item, just like the +50% exp vote perk.  The speed boosts should be +0.5 base speed and +0.5 max-speed for 15 minutes (stackable so if you read 4, you get 60 minutes). For context an ironwood (rune) hull has a base speed of 2.5 and a rosewood (dragon) has a base speed of 3.0 so +0.5 speed boost fits right in. 

• The Option 2 Daily task reset perk seems unnecessary. We can scrap that. Notice board tasks refresh every 60 minutes and you already get 15 daily task board refreshes. On my road to 99 I probably never used more than 8 refreshes in a day.
• The Option 3 Ocean encounter perk -- it could work but I don't think the ocean encounter loot is in demand. I never saw any ocean encounter loot that made me think: "I'd like more of this". 
• The Option 4 Cannon Max hit brew -- Sailing combat isn't released yet so this idea can be reconsidered later. It's not off the table like option 2 and 3 now are. 

A little joke: Sailing could be renamed Bank Space Nuker. I say that joke despite having already used a Bank expansion scroll. I wonder what the technical limitations to more bank space are? We could have a mini bank expansion scroll in the vote book shop. According to Perplexity AI's deep search, "OSRS gave 190 additional spaces for Sailing—100 base member spaces plus 10 added to each of nine purchased upgrades.". Alora, to the best of my knowledge, has given zero.  

In practice I've also spent more time killing frost dragons than actually sailing -- and expect to continue killing frost dragons for the dragon metal sheets and dragon nails. Just a sloop hull takes 600 dragon nails (40 sheets), a sloop keel alone takes 64 dragon metal sheets! (16 * 4 = 64). That's only two parts and zero facilities on one of your multiple boats. 

Just like there's a cannonball and burnt page item in the votebook shop, let's have there be a dragon metal sheet item in the vote book shop. We can give dragon metal sheets a starting price of 150 vote points before considering reducing the cost to 120 based on what the prevailing price of dragon sheets are months from now.  Spending more time killing frost dragons than actually sailing doesn't sit quite right with me so this gives an alternative path.

Last, an idea similar to the gem bag, we could add a bag of frags or corals to the vote point shop for the Elkhorn, pillar, or umbral frags. Corals are used to make Armadyl Brews, Haemostatic Dressing,  super hunter potions, and super fishing potions.  Likely this is an unexpectedly low-volume item given how low the total TP trading volume on Prayer regeneration potions and goading potions are, so this idea isn't as exciting as the others above. 

A priority note: Of the following 4 vote sites [RuneLocus, RSPS-List, MoparScape, RuneList], only RuneLocus has been updated to feature Sailing. RuneList still just says Sailing imminent, which is close. The middle two say Yama just released or Yama out now. So don't forget to update the 3 stale listings while this is still new. Also CONGRATS on being the very first RSPS in the world to implement sailing. Major achievement. In my opinion, you did a great job with the skill too.

TL;DR:

My suggested list of perks and items has been reduced to this:

4. Frag Bag. Item, unknown vote points, unknown contents of coral frags or corals. 
5. Cannon max hit brew, unknown vote points, raise cannon max hit by +1. +2 if you have a Keg of Perildance Bitter installed, since that keg already gives +1.

I think the first 3 would be a hit.

seeing How easy everyone buys votebooks and how easy they are to obtain, i dont see adding any “boosts” or sheets into vote shop. if anything bring them into daily point shop.

would bring more incentive to do them. currently i ONLY do dailies when i am in need of more super combats or the tasks are easy. i may do 1 of the 3 lol. this would force me to need more points therefore actually doing more dailies

what in tarnation? almost none of this makes any logical sense whatsoever, i dont even know if what i just read is real, i think dragon metal sheets should be added somewhere, sailing speed boost has to be the most restarted (not using the actual word) thing imaginable, horrible idea, i do think we should be able to expand our bank a bit, frag bag is an obviously narcissistic attempt to merch and sell stuff, cannon max hit brew would require a new item and would genuinely not matter since we can use ranged gear alongside cannons.

having more resets its fine, theres no negative to it and could help with people looking for specific tasks, especially in when bounty tasks release if people want very specific monsters, ocean encounter boosts could be useful i dont understand the issue with that either?

Dragon metal sheets: colordeus, GIM Flex, and I all agree these should be available somewhere. At 150 vote points the cost works out to roughly 24m per sheet, which is about where the TP price sits, so it's not undercutting the market. The precedent is there: cannonballs and burnt pages already live in the shop. I've spent more than 2x more time killing frost dragons than actually sailing because a sloop hull needs 600 dragon nails (40 sheets) and the keel needs another 64 sheets. An alternative source feels right.

 

Bank expansion scroll: OSRS gave up to 190 extra bank spaces for Sailing. Alora has given zero. A mini expansion scroll in the vote shop would help everyone.

 

Boat speed boost: +0.5 base / +0.5 max for 15 minutes, disabled during Barracuda Trials. A camphor or ironwood hull with the boost only temporarily matches a rosewood hull. Rosewood with the boost still goes faster. Hull upgrade tiers stay intact. That said, if the team prefers a gentler version, +0.5 base with no max speed increase or +0.25 on both for 30 min may work too.

 

Daily-point shop: GIM Flex raises a good point that the daily shop is just as stale. Dragon metal sheets could go in both. But only the Vote Point Shop drives RSPS-ranking traffic that brings in new players, so refreshing it matters for growth.

 

Frag bag, cannon brew, notice board resets, and encounter boosts may be low-demand. Happy to revisit any of those when there's more demand or when combat releases.

love the feedback man.  Only reason I say "ew" for votebook shop, is because then.. it literally cancels out the grind for any ironman who has a normal acc and gambles... Coming from 1 person who legit does not play that style, i'd fall really behind vs other "ironmen" who just... used votebooks on their iron from normal.

This is great to encourage more players to enjoy Sailing as well rather than simply grinding to 99 and never touch it ever again. This will make it somehow more fun I guess. Support on this too.
